Photoshop: Speed up the Quick Selection tool on high res images?

The Quick Selection tool is painfully slow on images that are 100MB RGB 8 bit flattened. I have an efficient running machine with LOTS of RAM and dedicated scratch disks.
I want to use this tool but simply can't. It takes much too long to process on higher resolution images. It seems like it is only effective on smaller images and not a 'pro tool' for heavy lifting. The progress bar presents itself and it takes 20-30 seconds to 'think' about the selection before it completes the process. Please give this tool some steroids in CS6?

Same problem. I use Win 7, 12 GB Ram, Quad processor, separate internal drive for scratch disc. It is extremely slow - especially when deselecting a small area of a selection.
