I found that when I used the "File:Export as Catalog..." command to export my entire catalog, database operations like delete from a static collection have sped up approximately 300-fold. I haven't tested, but I suspect other operations also have become much more snappier.
I ran "Optimize database" on my old database on a nearly daily basis, so obviously, an Export optimizes a database in a different way.
Adobe should figure out what is going on, and offer this (even if it is an Export as Catalog behind the scenes) as a way to speed up database operations.
I will archive my old and new databases, in case you want to examine them.
