Speed handling big files

I work with files that are always a minimum of 1GB up to 20GB, the biggest problem is opening, saving and converting to 16bit. Id love to work in 16bit all the time but Photoshop is even worse that this bit depth. I can't reduce the number of layers nor can i reduce the resolution. With clients requesting bigger images this problem will only get worse. Disabling compression on the PSB helps with the write speed, however, a 250GB file isn't really a workable size.

The problem as i see it is the inability to use modern multi-core cpu's effectively. It can't be the read or write speed of the hard drives as SSD's have vastly improved this yet these problems don't go away.

Same issues with 16 bit files for years!
Disabling PSD compression saves time, but rises up the size values  + ~40%.
Multicore saves awaited since 2005...
Adobe! Begging :D
And the rest is silence...
