Sort by aspect ratio is broken. A few years ago I wanted to create different sets of jpegs for displaying on vertical or horizontal monitors. I sorted the photos by aspect ratio and exported three sets: vertical, square and horizontal.

I just tried it in LR6 and the logic of how they are sorted is completely a mystery. If it was just by ratio (where 4x6 and 6x4 were the same) then all of the square crops would be at one end of the list, but things are just simply random.

It turns out, after more research, that I can somewhat implement this using metadata, looking for vertical, horizontal and square. That feature, however, seems to fall over inexplicably on a large number of photos where it can't tell whether the horizontal dimension divided by the vertical dimension is greater than a certain number (1.1?) or less than a certain number (0.9?).

I just did Sort: Aspect Ratio in my catalog (25K photos), and it sorted the photos by the numeric aspect ratio (width/height) of the cropped images. I'm on LR CC 2015.1.1 (OS X 10.10).

Please do Help > System Info and report the exact version that you're on.

Also, please post a full-resolution screenshot of the entire LR window, showing the screwy sorting, that would help troubleshoot the issue. Make sure the toolbar at the bottom is showing (View > Show Toolbar). (Note that you can't attach the screenshot to an email reply -- you must do it in your Web browser.)
