Being someone who uses music production and design software I can't help but find similarities in the workflow. I feel as though a 'Solo' or 'Isolate' button for layers would increase workflow by being able to see only one layer at a time for editing when the file becomes complicated, just like you would solo a music track.

I see, but then you loose track off any experimental hidden layers you may have, whereas when you solo a track in an audio sequencer you can then un-solo it to return things to normal. I often have many hidden layers which I may or may not use...

I suppose that is easily solved by grouping hidden layers. Thanks for the fast response

I'd like adobe to add a "solo layer" button in the layer pane in photoshop (next to the layer visibility button). Something similar to a solo track button found in audio editor programs. This would make previewing individual layers a lot more easier.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to solo a selected layer without clicking?

You can record actions and assign shortcuts.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping there was a native shortcut since I switch machines often, so I could avoid setting up the action on every machine.

Hi, you can easily SOLO out a layer, here's how:
1. Click on the eye ball next to the layer you want to solo, WHILE HOLDING ALT.
To switch back to the previous setup:
2. Click again on the eye ball, WHILE HOLDING ALT.
Feel free to edit the solo layer in the workspace, but becareful not to mess with the layer panel after you make a layer SOLO, or else you won't be able to switch back to your previous setup.

You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to Select> Isolate Layer. You still have to target the layer either in the Layers panel or with the Move Tool and Auto select Layer, but the command is a toggle, so the same kbsc to isolate it and to undo the isolation. And it won't mess with the visibility settings of your layers.

Go ahead and make changes to the solo layer. Then to get the previous visibility back, in the history pane select an entry before you soloed, then select the last entry in the history. You will then have reversed the solo AND have your changes.
