Soft proofing issues in LR 5.7 and printing issues.

I've looked at the posts here on soft proofing and I found them confusing. When printing, using an Epson 1500W my prints have a green cast; regardless of whether printer or LR manages colours. I got profiles made for my papers, but this did not solve the issue.

Thursday I went to a digital imaging show and watched a lecture where soft proofing was demonstrated. Basically the guy adjusted the proof image on the screen until it matched the original image. Here, I thought, was my solution. Back home I opened an image, checked the soft proof box, chose a paper profile and was disappointed. The proof image bore little resemblance to the master image. The image was washed out (lack of contrast?) and the colours were way off and muted. I turned on the gamut warning, but no amount of moving sliders would get rid of the gamut warning or bring the colours to even remotely resemble the master!

I don't understand what the problem is or how to correct it and I'm loath to print anything as the colours look terrible and LR is apparently telling me they are out of gamut anyway; so I've no real idea how they'll come out!

I have lots of paper and ink (Marrutt), but cannot print because the prints come out so awful. :-(
