CS5, Using Legacy Channel Shortcuts Option ON.

Scenario: when editing a Smart Object Layer (Photoshop file), it opens as PSB file.

Observation:
Photoshop Smart Object file opens as PSB regardless it's size.

Was this intended? And if the answer is yes, what are the benefits?

Yes, that is intended. When you create a Smart Object, we don't know what you're going to put in it and it needs to handle anything Photoshop can read or write - so it uses the most compatible format: PSB.
