It's great to have smart filters for smart objects, but it would be even better to also have smart filters and selection adjustments like expand, contract, feather or even refine selection added to mask layers independently to smart objects.

This would make tweaking selections easier and allow for even greater flexibility in editing.

Also, the additional controls for blurring, expanding/contracting current selection could be added to the toolbar.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Photoshop: Smart masks.

We can all create smart objects from layers, enabling the adjustment of effects, etc. However this isn't possible to do with a layer mask.

Lets say a layer mask has a blur applied—we are then stuck with the result rather that being able to go back and adjust later.

Smart masks would be a handy addition in my view.

Masks do have parametric blur built in using the Feather slider in the Properties panel if the mask is selected.
