I had a smart collection in Lightroom 4 holding all photo's that had the pick flag or at least one star. This was an "Adobe Revel Publish Service" in LR and worked fine for a couple of months uploading photo's to a library "Lightroom Flags and Stars" in my Revel account. Recently I discovered it was not uploading new flagged photo's anymore. It turned out that (probably after a recent upgrade) the Publish Service "Lightroom Flags and Stars" now contained a subfolder "My Album" and that the corresponding Collection in Lightroom was not a Smart Collection anymore, but just "Dumb" i.e., not updating anymore. There seems however to be no way to make this collection smart again. When I create a new smart collection with the same criteria, and I start publishing it, it asks if it should also upload the photo's that are already in Revel in another album. Of course I say NO, because this are almost 5K photo's. Then, in the new album it creates in the same Revel Library, it uploads only the (recent) photo's that were missing from "My Album". So now I have an album for the old and an album for the recent flagged photo's, which is not what I want. Als the new collection in LR keeps showing the non-re-uploaded photo's (which are in fact uploaded) as "New photo's to Publish". Of course I can delete all photo's from Revel and start all over again, but it will take several days to re-upload ca. 5000 photo's. I prefer to avoid that. Is there a way to merge albums and have a smart collection that uploads only those photo's that are not yet there already ? (also I find the whole interface between LR and Revel quite confusing)

I'm using LR 4.2 on Mac OSX 10.8

Hi Jules

I'll leave it to a Lightroom expert to discuss why publish settings may have changed or are not catching flagged photos for you. The Lightroom team owns the publish plugin, and may have better advice to offer, but let me share what I know of Revel to see if it helps you get going.

Revel is aggressive about not uploading duplicate photos, doing a binary comparison on each photo. Your effort to populate a second album with a mix of existing and new photos would work if you had uploaded using directly with Revel, so it sounds like better integration is needed with the publish plugin for Revel. We'll get the teams talking about this issue.

Let me try to help you work-around this in the mean time. It sounds like all the photos you want are now uploaded, but do not exist in the album you want? If this is the case, just select all the images you want in the album, and add them to the album. I recommend using the Mac Revel app if possible -- it allows easier selection (Cmd-A for Select All, Cmd- or Shift-click to select multiple). Adding the same photos to an album will not create duplicate photos, so it may be easiest to add everything you want to the new album. If the old album becomes obsolete, you may want to delete it while leaving the photos safe in your library and new album.

Just to ensure that Lightroom picks up on these changes, can point to the correct album, and perhaps avoid hiccups you mentioned, you might reset the current Revel Publish settings in Lightroom and log in again.

Thanks for your support Charlie !

This helps insofar that I can correct the situation in Revel and move all photo's to a single album.

However, it doesn't solve my problem: Lightroom seems not to have knowledge of the world in Revel (also not after re-login). It still thinks that is has to upload 1 updated and 3 new photo's to "My Album" and that it has published 27 photos'in "Flag or Star" (the new smart collection and album I created) and that it has 4637 unpublished photo's in "Flag or Star" .

This is quite annoying, because every publish I do takes ages, even if I say NO to re-uploading already uploaded photos. The time it takes to skip all the photos is also quite long.

The real solution would be to make the original collection in LR smart again (it has become dumb after some upgrade (probably the same upgrade that decided to create "My Album" in my Revel library that had no albums before). It doesn't allow me to do that in LR however. And new collections don't seem to know about existing situations.

So, I think it's a communication problem between LR and Revel (or the respective departments within Adobe ?)

I can for example also create a new smart collection and album called "4 Stars" that would give me in Revel an album with a subset of the photos in "flag or star". But that doesn't work. When I create this as a smart collection in LR it properly populates with the 4star photos and when I publish it, it says all photos are already in Revel, so it uploads nothing. The album "4 stars" is created in my Revel Library, but stays empty.

It would really be nice if you guys @ Adobe could sort this out, at least if you think there is a target audience for this kind of functionality. I took a subscription on Revel after a recommendation by Julieanne Kost in one of her excellent LR tutorial videos. I use it as an easy cloud backup of the big photo collection on my mac and possibility to show my photos anywhere on iPhone or iPad. Editing in Revel has less priority for me. But maybe I have chosen the wrong product ?

(BTW, now we're at it: uploading of RAW files or DNG ... that would really be a great feature !!)

Hi Jules

Thanks for taking the time to report this issue you found. The Lightroom team let me know they were able to reproduce this bug, and will work on a fix. I'm not sure if the fix will make it in time for the next update, or the one after. Please stay tuned.

Thank you!

Hi Jules,
Sorry, it caused trouble to you.
Yes, Lr 4.2 has updated the Revel publish service.
Below is some information I want to bring up.
In Lr4.1, collection(normal or smart collection) is mapped to Revel library
In Lr4.2/4.3, collection(normal or smart collection) is mapped to Revel album
Updating from 4.1 to 4.2, the migration have to create one default album(my album) to hold uploaded photos. At this time, migration didn't handle the smart collection.

For communication between Lr and Revel:
Currently, it's only one way: from Lr to Revel. Lr didn't fetch data from Revel(in fact, only fetch the album name, didn't fetch photos contained in album). For example, If you create one new album and put some photos to this new album in Revel side, then Lr will create one new collection mapped to the new album, but didn't fetch any photos though these photos have been uploaded by Lr before.
We knew it has limitation, and block some workflow now.

Back to your issue, unfortunately, I failed to find one good workaround to resolve this now. You have to republish(choose the 'replace') these uploaded photos again in your new smart collection this time.

Too bad that the LR - revel communication is only one way, sort of defeats the purpose of flexible on the road "cloud" editing, if one has to repeat all of it back home on the main computer.

I've also lost my smart collections from a publish service because of the revel plugin install.
I have to republish thousands of photos because of a tool that I just wished to discover :-(

I'm also waiting for a 2 way communication between LR and Revel so that I can do part of my workflow while on the road.
