CAMERA RAW: Smart Object RAW files in Photoshop change when opened

I have used the option to open RAW files in Photoshop as Smart Objects for over a decade now in order to preserve maximum nondestructive flexibility. Yet recently I noticed that when I open a Photoshop document from a few years ago and simply open the Smart Object, do nothing and press OK it changes the look of the image. With some files the wrong Process and Camera Profile gets applied (e.g. "2012 (Current)" instead of "2003"). But even if I correct that manually or if that doesn't happen the images changes. Sometimes it becomes sharper (even though I have sharpening off inside of Camera Raw) and sometimes the colors change slightly.

Is it possible to open/edit RAW files inside Smart Objects inside Photoshop documents without these random changes?

I just noticed, this really becomes a problem, when cropping older images, as it seems that this causes Photoshop to re-raster the RAW, thus changing the colors and brightness of the image.
