I have a photoshop document consisting of multiple smart object (I need to change the content often without altering the perspective). For unknown reasons one particular smart object would occasionally give me the error "Kan uw verzoek niet uitvoeren omdat Photoshop dit type bestand niet herkent" "Can't perform the requested action because Photoshop doesn't recognize this type of file." Previously I went back to an earlier save to bypass this issue. Today I couldn't and decided to try and fix it and I think I found the problem:
I clicked on "omzetten in gekoppeld" (Convert to Linked). It asks me to save and name the new linked file. I noticed that the filename it showed was called "side." Apparently for some reason it had removed the file extension. If I then rename it to "side.psd" I could open the now linked object again.

I'm working in the latest Adobe CC on a Macbook Pro 2018.
