Photoshop: Slow running CS6

I just bought Adobe CS6 Design & Web Premium and have opened Photoshop for the first time. It is operating extremely slow for some reason. When I look at my system information, it seems that I have enough hard drive space. The efficiency monitor on Photoshop is at 100%, and despite all of this it takes almost 10 minutes for me to apply something as simple as a gradient, then another 3 to 5 minutes for the actual gradient to show up on the whole image. I don't have any other apps open except for safari and I only have one window open on it. I have 4 GB of memory on my mac and it says I have 359 GB free out of 499 GB available. Can someone please tell me why it is running so slow?

Did you install all the updates?

Do you have any third party plugins? If so, have you tried disabling them?

And have you checked for corrupt fonts?
