the tools react on a 3 second DELAY -- the Marquee SQUARE tool only shows as an OVAL. This makes my photoshop Elements UNUSABLE.

What version of Elements are you using?
What OS version are you using?

Did you enter a feather value for the marquee tool that you forgot about? Or switch to the ellipse marquee by mistake?

You are SO right about the feathering on the marquee tool. I changed it and it works correctly. Now, why is my pen and pad reaction so slow. I am using a Mac OS X Yosemite. After installing Yosemite ; PSE 13 worked fine --but, has slowed too much to be usable.

OK, MacOS 10.10 has some driver problems that are causing artifacts, slowdowns, and some crashes. Apple is aware of these issues and working on solutions.

One issue that might slow you down is drawing rulers on the document - if you have rulers enabled, try disabling them. We're still trying to figure out why they draw so much slower on MacOS 10.10 (and were fine before 10.10).

Oh, me, such mysterious complications. I have disabled the rulers with only a slight improvement in reaction time. I wish Apple would solve these problems -- I am 85 and don't have a lot of time to be patient. My calligraphy work is suffering because of this. I commend you for your rapid response.

Apple is working on a lot of issues in MacOS 10.10. And frankly, I'd like them to fix the crashes and video driver corruption issues first. While performance is nice, it takes a back seat to stability.

Funny, my calligraphy only suffers when my hand cramps (because I don't do it often enough :-) ).

Would it help to reinstall my Elements 13 ? I use Photoshop Elements with my Calligraphy in order to enhance it, detail it. and prepare it for printing.

Reinstalling is unlikely to help - that would only work if something was missing or corrrupted (which would have given you an error message about the problem).

Make sure you have the 10.10.2 OS X update installed.

Also make sure the Elements 13.1 update is installed.

If you're still seeing a slow response after that, restore your preferences by holding down the command + option + shift keys when you launch Elements.

Well - the Elements update is installed and the OS X I installed (today)--but no improvement yet. I also canceled the preferences and restored them. When I use the writing tool I see a flash of color shaped like a pie before it reacts. That wait time is also after I lift, leaving a straight line at the end. The wait time has improved from 3 secs to 2 secs ----or maybe I'm just getting used to it!! Do you work all of the time ??

I am back in business -- and thanks to you --I turned every thing off and took a long walk in lovely weather --and when I returned every thing was working. I don't know which suggestion made a difference --but I am so relieved. Even the flash of color is no longer there. Technology is amazing, but scary for seniors. I appreciate your knowledge and your patience.
