Lightroom: Simplifying Left Panel Navigation

I have lots of "nested" folders on each drive and lots of "nested" Collections.

As I work the LH panel gets longer and longer. Scrolling up and down closing trees so I can start again becomes tedious.

The Panels have ingenious "solo mode" and "collapse all" options - can this idea be extended to drives and collections sets please... AND.. can we have a "FLATTEN EVERYTHING" option in the Files tab and the Folders tab.

Pete, have you tried Alt/Option clicking a collection set or top level folder?

I'd concede this isn't obvious - but I'm not sure Solo mode (which I always use) is obvious either.

Thanks John,

Alt click helps a lot (I didn't know about it), but it only callapses additional levels within one stack.

Flattening everything and a solo mode feature would, in my view both be considerable improvements.

Your suggestion of ALT click was a good one except that:-

- Alt/click collapses only the heirarchy that you alt/click.

I guess what I'm really asking for is the facility to alt/click the disclosure triangle to the right of the "Drive Bar"

Pete, can you explain more about how you'd expect "flatten everything" to work?

Hi Julie,
At the moment if I start with image1.

If I click the disclosure triangle for (D:) Photos & Documents it callapses the heirarchy to look like image 2.

If I click again on the disclosure triangle it goes back to image 1 (Collapse 1).

What I want is for and Alt/click in the first instance to result in image3. when I click on the disclosure triangle again.

At the moment regardless of what you do it reverts to image 1.

Which is a long way of saying:

What I'm really asking for is the facility to alt/click the disclosure triangle to the right of the "Drive Bar"

I do hope I'm not being too obtuse.

Pete

If your work lends itself to be broken up into disjunct parts then using multiple catalogues might alleviate your problem.

I find multiple catalogues to be useful for a number of reasons but they have the downside that you'll have to know which catalogue to use if you are looking for a particular image. Also, sometimes I have to export a set of images as a catalogue to import them into another one.

If you can cleanly separate your work then multiple catalogues may help.

Thanks TK. I had wondered about that as a solution. I have also started another thread about locking images and one possible way of alleviating that problem is also multiple catalogues.

I've always assumed that the advantages of one very large catalogue outweighs the problems of managing additional catalogues.

Now I have more knowledge of LR I can see the split doesn't have to be completely discreet and I could have the same image in mutiple catalogs and treat differently in each - now there's a recipe for confusion.

I tonk I'll start by plitting my family and social pictures from the library stuff and see how it goes.

Thanks again
