Silent conflict of metadata with Lightroom on near-full SD cards

Adobe Lightroom has silently refused to write metadata to my SD card because it has less than 1 GB free, meaning that metadata changes have accumulated in both Bridge and Lightroom. Now there is a conflict and I am going to lose metadata on hundreds of photos. This represents multiple arbitrary and flawed design decisions by adobe that have created this awful situation. Is there a workaround?

I am very curious. How would this ever come up? Are you using your SD cards as Master Storage Locations?

SD cards are transient storage, a way to get photos from the camera to the computer, not for semi-permanent storage of photos.

Yes, this is transient storage. The cards from contributors are transferred to the vesting authority once metadata have been added.
