I keep it off, and select my layers via shortcuts: CMD+right-click and select in the list, or Hold V, CMD and get topmost layer, move, release V.
But I can understand that one would like to assign shortcuts to other interface controls...

Yes I've used this method as well, but if you want to move whole groups it's not as useful, clicking layers with auto-select and multiple layers holding shift is a really fast way of working especially when using a lot of layers in interface design. Then having yo manually untag to move folders/groups every time is a bit annoying, so a shortcut to achieve this would be a nice feature...

I guess it's a little lazy and pedantic, but having to hold down the command key every time you need to select is annoying as well, esp when you have to do it a billion times per day lol... appreciate your comments mate :)

I always have the hand next to the CMD, OPT, Shift and spacebar... But YMMV, I don't select as often as you do, it seems...

A shortcut key to toggle between move tool's layer/group option would be useful.
I looked for but there is no way to assign it.

I'd love to see a keyboard shortcut in Photoshop to select the parent group of the current layer/group.

1. Create two Tool Presets that consist of:
a) Move Tool + Auto-Select + Layer
b) Move Tool + Auto-Select + Group
2. Create an Action that records when you select your Tool Preset:
Make sure to assign a Function Key when naming your Action.
(e.g. You can assign F1 for Group and Shift+F1 for Layer)
Hope that helps :)

If you want to make a single shortcut that actually toggles, here's how (in Illustrator 2018). Make tool presets as above, but make 3 actions as follows;
Auto-select toggle (F3)
If
current layer is layer group
Then Play Action: action "Auto select layer"
Else Play Action: action "Auto select group"
Auto-select layer
Select tool preset "Autoselect layer"
Auto-select group
Select tool preset "Autoselect group"
Use "Insert Conditional" to get the If statement in the action.
Toggle-ahoy!

There is a shortcut key to do exactly this and I have been searching to find it again but keep seeing this thread. Its a simple keystroke that will toggle Layer to Group and when released goes back to Layer making it more efficient to quickly grab a whole group. If I find the answer I'll post here.
UPDATE: Looks like something changed in 2014.2 release so this little trick appears to be removed. http://feedback.photoshop.com/photosh...
