Lightroom/Camera Raw: Sharpness much better with 2003 process

Hi, I find that 2003 process with high values in sharpness in camera raw and lightroom produces much better images than 2010 and 2013 processes. Try for example 120, 1, 40, 0 in sharpness settings with each process.

Maybe you have to look why is this and correct it on next lightroom and camera raw versions.

thanks,
Carles

In the newer process versions, you need to drop detail way down (like say 10-15 instead of 40) if you are going to crank amount up that high.

Also, try bumping the radius up some, like say 50% (in the newer process versions), to achieve an effect more like 2003 sharpening.

For example compare:
2003: 120 1.0, 40, 0 to
2010: 120 1.5, 12, 0

Note: the newer process versions are so much cleaner that they can give the sense of reduced sharpness, but I think the improved sharpening (in newer process versions) is more natural looking.

Cheers,
Rob

I will try rob but contrast also highlights are better with default settings in 2003 with canon 6d. For the moment I'm happier with the results of 2003 process with same sharpness values. But anyway I will try with your values too.

Well, Adobe is ever-improving their sharpening algorithms, so it might get better still, but I doubt it will ever go backward. If it's any consolation, I've had the same impression before, but then I realized why.., and now I think the newer is the better.

Put another way, the old sharpener had a sorta, detail-consolidation/simplification/dark-tone bias sorta thing that I agree could make an image look sharper, my only claim is that it's sortof an illusion, and the newer sharpener maintains a more natural look even at higher amounts.

For example, I have a few photos I keep in PV 2003 because I like the painterly effect of sharpening amount and radius all the way up - you can't get a painterly look outa the newer sharpener.

PS - Contrast & highlights? - are we still talking about sharpening? - warrants a new thread maybe?

Cheers,
Rob
