Sharpening often creates unpleasant artifacts such as halos around darker elements in a photo. I'd like to see a checkbox in the standard Unsharp Mask and the Smart Sharpen dialogs that allows the effect to be applied in Darken mode. The effect from doing it this way is much more natural for some images and eliminates a lot of touch-up work to restore clipped highlights or remove haloing.
Yes, I know this is easy to do with a layer, but large images require duplicating the entire image to put a Darken layer over the background and that greatly increases memory use and file size.
