Separating a peacock from its habitat background. (lots of crossing hair on changing surrounding textures and colors)

I write this after having tremendous difficulties in trying to clean up a Peacock.
I have found this task very difficult if not impossible.
Cleaning natural animals from its background has two substantial problems:
1. The animals "samples" surrounding colors of its habitat for camouflage hence its form wears colors similar to its surroundings and its difficult to separate between the two by means of "select color range" or refining area or channels selection mask.
2. The form of the animal - like in the case of a peacock - is sometimes very complex and so it is very difficult to clean the colors from within the many forms created by feathers intertwined.
I think a good way of achieving this might be by sampling a shape (like a peacock feather) or a repeated form of shape and then allow it to auto enhance to a similar auto traced or searched shape just like it , find all similar shapes like itself and lock on to them as a selection, to allow then to perform all the "regular" cleaning tasks.

but as a whole, I'd like to find ways to clean complex shaped objects like a peacock - a very beautiful animal :-)
