For some reason, the selection tools in PS have stopped working. After trying the lasso and nothing happens, Photoshop crashes.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Howdy Leona,

Is the problem persistant?  That is, does it happen after you relaunch your OS and Photoshop?  What version of each are you using?  Does it happen with all files?  Does it happen with all selection tools?  Have you tried trashing your preferences?  What were you doing before you started having this problem?  Have you installed anything new lately?

Let's start from there,
Thanks,
David

Hi David,
Thank you for your efforts to help me!
The problem happens every time we try to use a selection tool. When I grab the lasso and try to draw, I get a very short little line started then nothing appears after that. Shortly after this, PS crashes. It seems to be a problem with all selection tools.
I've tried restarting PS, clearing the preferences when restarting (holding down the alt, shift, cntrl), resetting preferences from the options menu.
We haven't installed anything new lately.
We are using Windows 10 and the latest Adobe CC PS.
Thank you!
Leona

Howdy Leona,

Are you using a tablet, by chance?  What kind of keyboard are you using?

Don't worry; we'll figure this out.

Thanks,
David

Well we figured part of it out. We are using a desktop computer but found that we have a couple different versions of PS CC installed. We were having issues with PS 2019. We don't have a problem with PS 2017.
I don't know what the difference is with the 2 versions but, something in 2019 causes the issue.
We might just stick with the older version unless, you have an idea why one works and the other doesn't.
Thank you, David!

Howdy Leona,

That's odd.  There's no difference for selection between versions.  Could it be that you have an issue with GPU support which is manifesting as a selection problem?  You can check by going to Preferences > Performance and turning off Use GPU.  Do the problems then stop?  Also, what kind of keyboard and/or mouse and/or tablet are you using.  Those are more likely candidates, particularly tablets.

I'm happy to help you try to trouble-shoot this.  Just let me know...

Thanks,
David

I did go to Preferences and turn it off. I still had the problem.
It's a Windows desktop computer with wired keyboard and mouse.
Thanks David.

Howdy Leona,

Are you using a tablet of any sort?  What about software that captures keyboard input -- do you have any installed?  Common examples are screen capture and DJing apps, actually, as well as system utilities.  What you're describing sounds like the app is receiving conflicting input.

Long shot here -- have you tried clearing your PS preferences?

I'd really like to do a web-hosted screenshare with you in order to get to the bottom of this.  Interested?  Respond here and I'll email you the details.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,
Not a tablet. It's a desktop computer. We don't have any screen capture installed on this computer.
Also, I did a PS restart and held down the alt, ctrl, and shift key to reset PS prefs.
I also disabled the GPU in preferences.
I'd be happy to do a screen share.
Thanks so much.

The whole computer is crashing? A system hang or freeze requiring a computer restart usually means a low level failure such as a driver (bad video card driver, etc), failing hardware (hard disk, video card, etc.) or damaged OS installation.

sorry. no . the app (PS) just stops working. Usually I have to quit PS and re-launch. Rarely do I have to restart the computer.
