Selection and type tool won't select correct layer

I've tried using the command click to select, type tool and regular select tool to choose and edit a layer, but it will not select the right layer. Even when I lock the wrong layer it's auto-selecting, I can't select the layer I want - it goes back to the lock layer, telling me it's locked. I've also tried hiding the layers that I don't want selected and it just selects the next layer down, but not the layer I'm actually trying to select. I can only click-select/type edit the layer I want by hiding all the other layers.

Hi Amanda,

What version of Photoshop are you running?  On which Operating System?  Do you have this problem with other documents?  Have you tried rebooting your app and/or OS?

Thanks,
David

Photoshop CC 2015. OSX 10.10.4. I've uninstalled and reinstalled PS and restarted but didn't help.

If I rebuild them, it seems fine. So at this point something about that file is corrupted. If I copy over an artboard or just layers from the messed up file to a new document, the problem persists.

Hi Amanda,

It does sound like that particular file has a problem.  It would be totally plausible that if you copy layers from that file to another document, the problem very likely can come along for the ride.  I'm not sure about the cause, but MANY things can trigger it, from hardware faults on your machine to power surges to software issues.  I would suggest you just delete this file and keep an eye out.  If the problem returns, PLEASE feel free to contact me immediately.

Thanks,
David
