Photoshop: Selection and Mask Not Working Properly

The Selection and Mask filter is not functioning properly at all. I have an iMac and when I go to this filter, here is what typically happens. I'll make an initial selection with the Quick Selection tool. But when I go to refine the edge, it makes the selection much worse, not better! Also there seems to be a bug with viewing the Onion Skin mode. It only changes the transparency in the small pic in the Properties section, but no change appears in the photo itself. Any suggestions?

Claude, this is a known issue with Select and mask on Mac & PC. In the meantime, the old refine edge is still available. to get to it, first make a selection. Then, go to the Select menu, Hold Shift and click on the select & mask in the menu. The old refine edge will open.

I have noticed too, that if I select a different view—onion view, overlay etc., I get an error & it closes Select & Mask. Very frustrating if I just did many changes & I have to start all over again. So I started saving the selection BEFORE opening Select & Mask so at least I don't have to do that part again too. Otherwise I think it's working a little better than before.  Windows 10.
