Photoshop: Selecting a layer shows a message 'Target channel is hidden'

The Photoshop file was working perfectly normally but suddenly I am unable to select layers, or move them, and a message pops out as "Could not use move tool because the target channel is hidden. 
Please help

Have you gone into the channels tab to see if any of the RGB channels are hidden as that's what I'm gathering from the message!

Sounds like you have QuickMask enabled but hidden. See if this is what you're encountering:
