Photoshop: Select and Mask ineffective on low-res image

Select and mask continues to be an ineffective Photoshop tool. I grabbed a low res, "72dpi" photo and used both tools. The photo results speak for themselves. The old refine edge is still present in 2017. Use the select menu and hold SHIFT while clicking Select and mask.

You can hold shift and WHAAAAAT!? You just made my week. I have been really unhappy with the new select and mask.

Again, you must hold shift use the Select menu, not the button

This hidden option won't stay around forever. I'm guessing it's still around because Adobe knew Select & Mask was not ready for any real genuine use. When Select & Mask is at a state Adobe feels is sufficient, I'll bet that 'Shift + Select' will be gone.

So it's been a tough choice lately: Do you...
a. sacrifice time today to relearn some new experimental replacement – knowing it's not going to go away.
-or-
b. continue to work quickly and efficiently with Refine Edge and just let the 'sh*t hit the fan' once it's fully removed from Photoshop and deal with it then.

I use it most of the time, trying new ways and tips to get a clean  extraction. But when a result is not repeatable with a certain tool it tells me the tool itself is the problem, not the photo. Old refine edge is always accurate for me. If adobe pulls it I'm going to try affinity pro. There selection method works!

The whole problem with it is they moved it to the gpu, thinking it would be faster. It's not, it's slower and far less accurate. Also they blame the video cards. if it's the video card than how come old refine edge is still perfect!!

Here are my system specs. The only thing that bothers me about this is that the old Refine edge works perfectly. I've learned from the past the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it.";)
