Lightroom mobile: Ability to search using keywords

I have 65,000 photos or so on Lightroom and would love to be able to search through them on my iPad using keywords. They do not have to be full resolution versions, I'd be happy with them scaled down to look good on the iPad display. I have tried...

1. Pocket Smith - wasn't impressed - cluncky and slow

2. Adobe cloud - can't sync all photos, can't sync smart collections

3. Creating published service to a folder on the hard drive with sub directories by year and synching with IOS photos. No keyword searching and hard drive intensive.

4. Using Microsoft onedrive by creating published service to a folder on the hard drive on onedrive. Oncedrive seems to recognise keywords but doesn't do a great job of searching through them. There is also no way of making files available offline on the ipad.

I assume that when Lightroom creates smart previews it generates a small JPEG, the Lightroom catalogue file certainly gets very big with smart previews. Isn't it a shame those JPEGs can not, somehow, be synced with IOS in a searchable format, that would be perfect.

Any other suggestions of how this could be done?

Just to be clear, Lightroom mobile does not have keywords or search at this point in time.

Hi Alexandre, I must admit I haven't payed with it since the early releases, is it possible to get all photos on the app? I seem to remember that it was not possible to sync smart collections which put me off.

I think it's possible with the last release. Yes it is. Just try and you'll see. It's sync with all the collections, thumbnails are so good. You can work offline and when the connexion is on, everything sync.

No smart collections. You can put all your photos into Lightroom mobile though, just by dragging them to the All Synced Photos collection in the Catalog panel.

Hi Peter, I am using Mylio and it is working quite well. You can select Thumbnails, Previews and Originals to be synchronized, depending on your available storage. You can work without a cloud. Searching and Tagging is great. The downsize is the monthly cost, but you need not to pay for a cloud service. Best would be if Adobe would implement such a Feature.

It's a popular request, and although Lightroom mobile can't do it yet, I'd expect it to be a fairly high priority.

Thanks for the response guys, I am looking at Lightroom mobile again as Alexandre suggested. It seems better than last time I looked but appears to still have two massive limitations

1. can't search or filter by keywords
2. Can't sync smart collections

To be useful to me I would have to create a bunch of smart collections in Lightroom and regularly drag the contents  into standard collections which are synced. I would then have enough folders in the app to find what i am looking for.

I must admit I have never needed the ability to edit photos on my phone or ipad, as far as I am concerned the ipad is a device for showing media and the mac is a device for creating it.

Milos - RIP Picasa

Peter - thanks I'll take a look at Mylio.

Victoria - thanks I hope you are right, do you have a workflow of Lightroom to mobile device?

There's a bunch of free blog posts and free infographics on my website at the moment that should help.

Personally, I use Lightroom mobile constantly. It's my favorite tool for sorting through and flagging/starring photos, because the swipe up/down feels so natural. I prefer to use my desktop for serious editing, but it's handy for quick edits on vacation, or tweaking a photo to see if it's worth keeping.

Keywords/search is a limitation without a solid workaround at the moment, but they're constantly adding new features and they've recently started adding metadata editing, so that's the next logical step.

Yes, let us hope that Adobe is adding the keyword search or/ and the search for title and subtitle or all metadata :-)
And then develop a full LR for iPad pro, that would be the highlight of the century.

Beyond keywords and search Peter, what else would you like to see added?

My ideal scenario would be for the JPEG's that are already created in smart previews to be automatically uploaded to the cloud. I would then like to them to be searchable by keywords in the app and made available offline without taking up a huge amount of space. I would be happy to  sacrifice some quality here.

At this stage I would completely stop using the IOS photos app.

Ideally I would then like the ability to not just search but organise within Lightroom mobile. So add keywords, and put in collections. If we are going further than the ability to publish to any of my publish services would be fantastic.

When I first saw the new Lighroom CC I though all my prayers had been answered! I have synced a bunch of photos up to the cloud using the new Lightroom  Classic. All of them nicely keyworded. The new Lightroom app on the ipad looks great and has a very promising little search button on the top left.

However it seems to only find some of the photos with certain keywords and does not, I think, find any people who have been tagged.

It also, bizarrely, refuses to work at all if not connected to the internet even if I have made the files available offline!

Oh well..
