Digging further I found that the error occured when I had a layer group inside a layer group. When the inner most layer group had opacity set to anything other than 100% or blending mode to be anything other than Pass Through I could get same errors. Setting them back and it'd work fine.

Adamray, I tried your suggestion and it worked!

We have this problem almost every day some time after lunch (strangely it's always at that time). If I disconnect the server via the Volumes pop up in the Dock it really does'nt disconnect, but it surely is possible to save immedeatly afterwards! Anyway we are always able to save to the desktop when the problem occurs. (Photoshop, CS6, Mac 10.6.8)

I had this same issue with a PSD not saving. I managed to save it if I removed all layers (I know, bear with me), so thought this must be due to a particular layer(s).

Luckily my PSD wasn't too big, so I went through and deleted one layer at a time and tried saving. I found my issue was a text layer... perhaps this was a combined Photoshop and font issue.

Either way annoying but give this a wirl

IMHO the problem is caused by luminance masks. As soon as you remove or apply them to a layer, the issue is solved. I had the same problem as I tried to save a PSD file. Then I created a copy, deleted all the layers and copied them in from the original file one by one. The devil was a level adjustment layer with a ,uminance mask, created by the "select > color range > shadows" menu. It creates a luminance mask in the channels palette. After removing that one, I was able to save the file normally.

First, make sure you have the latest Photoshop updates installed.

With only 2 GB of RAM you might not have enough memory to work with video files.

I can usually get around this problem by selecting all of the layers in a document, and then converting to smart object. Once the smart object is made I right click on the layer and choose export contents. This will save everything with all layers intact. Then I'll usually restart Photoshop. Not sure what causes the error, but this works for me every time.

Actually it was an MacOS bug that we worked around. And not all the reports are due to the same OS bug.

And patch CS6 was to difficult, I guess ?

Everything is good to push your customers to rent CC, isn't it ?

We're constantly fixing bugs and working around OS bugs -- if you don't have the current version, then you never have all the fixes/workarounds.

Toggling visibility off of a few layers allowed me to save my image. Restarted Photoshop and all is OK now.

Switching of visibility of one levels layer did it.
Use CC2014 on OS X 10.10 so it is not restricted to CS6 only.

After you save the file, and reopen it, could you turn on the offending layers and resave it? or do you still get a program error?

I have gotten every error on this thread. Including:
Not being able to use the paint brush or bucket on a layer - or toggle back and forth
Cannot save due to program error (to psd file able to save to jpeg)
Cannot open a file due to a program error

I've updated and did a few of the "fixes here. I am operating on Yosimite 10.10.5
