Chris - I'll chime in - for me this started happening when I updated to PS CC 2015 - version 20150529.r.88. x64. Bridge is version 6.1.1.10 x64

Hmm.
Do you have Bridge set to write metadata into the file, or keep it in the Bridge database?
Do you have Photoshop set to open JPEG files with ACR?

- I don't know. I did not change any settings from the previous version. Where do i find the settings for how Bridge works with metadata?

Do you have Photoshop set to open JPEG files with ACR?
- No - I never use ACR.

Confirmed, opened a file with star rating and label from Bridge. Save As, SFW, Export, and Save all removed both rating and label.

SFW is expected, since by default it removes all metadata.
But I haven't been able to reproduce the problem.

Photoshop is not opening JPEG images into ACR.

Where is the option to write metadata into files vs the Bridge database? I'm not seeing that setting.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Saving files removes labels and ratings in Photoshop CC 2015.

When I save any labelled or rated image files, the ratings an/or labels are instantly removed. Please, let me know if there is a work around or a fix, as I use labels and ratings all the time.

I edited a dozen JPEGs today in PS CC 2015 with star ratings added in Bridge, then saved to the same file, and saved to new files -- all retained their star rating. The only time I lost the ratings was when using SaveForWeb with no metadata preserved.

So there is some other, non-default factor involved on your systems that show this issue. But other than Bridge not writing out metadata, or opening files in ACR, I don't know what that factor might be.

When I called and spoke to Adobe, the gentleman was able to reproduce the issue on both Windows and Mac. I'll assume you are using the latest versions of everything. I am updated according to CC app.

Jeffrey, it's really quite simple - I just rate and label a JPG while using Bridge, and then save the file as a new JPG or PSD in Photoshop and voila, the tag and label are revmoved. See the first post in this thread - the original poster has screen grabs that show it exactly.

I just cross checked the metadata or the original against the new saved file and found it interesting that part of my contact IPTC data is stripped as well, and the date format is changed. Along with the removing of the label and rating info.

Are these JPEGs already open in Photoshop at the time you edit the metadata in Bridge?

For me, they are not. I apply my XMP template to my images through Bridge (right click, file info, etc) when they are nearly completed for delivery to my client, including my website, phone number, email, etc. After saving an image, this info is stripped out, as well. Just like Jason ^^^above.

Can you do a quick test between the "etc." and "After" in your workflow--that is after you have edited metadata but before saving--check to see if the metadata shows up in File Info in Photoshop. Basically, these steps...

1. Edit the metadata in Bridge. (Note the status in the lower left corner of the Bridge window. It will indicate when Bridge is busy writing those edits; wait until Bridge is done.)

2. Open the image in Photoshop. (By the way, is the file opening through the Camera Raw dialog in this case?)

3. While open in Ps, but before saving, open File Info in Ps to see if your metadata shows up there.

4. Now save the image.

This may help determine where the metadata goes missing--when Bridge writes it (or not?), when Ps opens the file, or when Ps saves the file.

David, no the files are not open in PS at the time I edit the metadata in Bridge. I have tagged the thumbnails of the JPGs that are direct exports from RAW files. I run Dr Brown's Image Processor Pro on a couple hundred of them, and then all the labels and ratings get stripped. OR, I open a labelled file and work on it and resave it as a PSD and same thing happens. It is pretty straightforward as far as I can see and that is what is baffling me.

Please provide a sample of a JPG file that exhibits the behavior: metadata that appears in Bridge does not appear in Photoshop after you open the file in Photoshop.

I just did a test where I checked the file info for the same image in Bridge and in Photoshop. The image was rated in Bridge with 2 stars and the file info in Bridge confirmed this. I then opened the same image in Photoshop and clicked on File>Info. Here, there was no rating showing at all (???)

However, going the other way, if I gave the image 5 stars in the PS file info dialogue box, and saved it in PS, the file info in Bridge would show the 5 stars.(and the thumbnail would change accordingly)

There seems to be a one-way disconnect here. Any ideas?

I can confirm this is happening to me also. I tag/rate my images in Photo Mechanic and it's acting similarly. When opening the file in the latest Photoshop CC 2015 there is no star rating in the file info dialogue.

There is a post on the Adobe Public forums regarding the metadata being stripped out using Image Processor - is there a relation?

Yes, there is a connection. It looks like some people are noticing that the 'save' function in 2015 has changed somehow and the problem is not with the Image processor script but with Photoshop itself. I hope the folks at Adobe are working on this issue...

My apologies, I did not realize you were Adobe employees. I appreciate the help.

The issue is a disconnect between Bridge and Photoshop and being able to read the metadata between the two of them as in my post just above. I have made sure that both programs are up to date, but to no avail.I sure hope this issue can be replicated soon, as my workflow relies heavily on ratings and labels.

I can reproduce the error:

1. Setting a label and rating to a jpeg in Bridge (6.0.1.6 x64). Viewing the file info in Bridge I see (among many others):
5
Approved

2. Open the image via double click in PS 2015.1 (Win7/64bit) I see none of the Rating or label XML-Tags in the File Info there.

3. Saving the JPEG (same or other name) from PS results in the lost of label and rating in Bridge.

There seems also to be a difference between the Adobe XMP Core Versions:
While Bridge shows in the FileInfo a
"Adobe XMP Core 5.5-c014 79.151805, 2013/04/09-12:08:21"
Photoshop shows
""Adobe XMP Core 5.6-c067 79.157747, 2015/03/30-23:40:42"

Edit:
Using PNGs the labels and ratings are preserved after open/save the PNG in PS.
Open a JPEG with labels/ratings in PS and saving it as PNG deletes the information.

Konrad,

In between steps 1 and 2, can you leave Bridge check in the Windows explorer if the file modification date "Date modified" of the file has actually changed?

Does it matter where the JPGs are stored in your filesystem? What if you use a JPEG that's just sitting on your desktop.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

the modification date changed to now, the time I set label and rating.

Doesn't seem to matter, where the file is located.
Problem occurs on Desktop, second internal drive, external hdd ... all NTFS formatted.

Here's a sample three-star rated JPG file that was created from a three-star rated NEF file The NEF was rated in Bridge, processed and exported from Lightroom. Lightroom sees all the metadata with no issues. Photoshop does not see that it is rated according to the file>info dialogue box.

Can anyone see the rating metadata (three stars) in Photoshop?

The rating metadata appears in Photoshop for me. Can you provide a copy of your Photoshop system info (Help menu, System Info)?

Also, please try changing your Camera Raw Preferences (Edit menu > Preferences > Camera Raw...) so that JPEG Handling is set to "Automatically Open all Supported JPEGs). Then try opening the image again in Photoshop--does that make a difference?

Thanks

I tried the "Automatically open all supported JPEGs" and when I opened the file that way, it maintained the rating metadata - strange. So using ACR as a 'bridge' between Bridge and Photoshop seems to keep the rating intact.

Sorry, don't have a Windows machine with me right now. I'll have to wait for someone else to test that.

Thank you Jason. I've been able to reproduce the bug using your JPEG on a Windows 7 system... so far it does not seem to affect Windows 8.1.

I'm glad the workaround of opening JPEGs through the Camera Raw dialog is working for you for now.

Glad you could replicate it. Unfortunately, using ACR is not an option when I am running scripts on 300-400 rated images - one script is Image Processor Pro for resizing into two folders and the other is for saving/closing/opening next file to retouch in a folder. I hope another workaround is discovered soon.

If you look at File Info->Raw Data in Photoshop, you can see the rating being stripped out. Set the star rating, notice that the XML key is visible right below the date, then save. Open it back up, and the rating key is gone.

Windows 7SP1 64-bit, fully up-to-date, and CC fully up-to-date. Changing the checkboxes in Bridge Preferences->Metadata makes no difference.

Apparently, Photoshop is not properly parsing the line on open? The rating IS saved, as it still appears in Bridge after Save and close.

Bridge doesn't appear to be involved, as the issue still happens if Bridge is not running.

I have exactly the same problem - we had to roll back to 2014.    Calls to Adobe are not helping, they don't seem to know about this issue and can't help.

I am thinking of rolling back too. PS 2015 and LR 2015 have a couple of serious bugs that should have been caught before release.

Our engineering teams are investigating this issue.

Please see this document for workarounds: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/...

Uh, thanks for the workarounds but... some of are in work environments where none of those are an option.

My company is on Windows 7. Not about to upgrade to a newer OS.

I'm doing product photography, shooting tethered in RAW and processing via Bridge/Photoshop. I use Save For Web/Image Processor/Processor Pro numerous times every day because I need multiple sized JPEGs as output. I also have numerous actions and scripts in my workflow.

As it is, I have to reapply our company-standard metadata numerous times in Bridge, by hand.

At home, I have my own photo business where I'm more of an artist and less of an assembly line photo processor. But I'm on a Mac there.

Tell your engineering teams 1. Hope the regression testing goes well and 2. add "saving files without losing data" to their automated test suite. :)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Any progress on fixing metadata loss on Win 7?.

Is there any word on fixing the data loss bug for PS CC on Windows 7?

I do a lot of batch processing and have to re-apply IPTC metadata numerous times in Bridge. This is a major PITA to say the least.

For those who haven't seen it, the current version of Photoshop CC on Windows 7 apparently has a bug when opening files. It doesn't properly read the IPTC XML tags and the result is that metadata, star ratings, and Bridge labels are deleted when the file is saved.

Adobe's suggested workarounds are: Windows 8 (not happening in a corp environment), reinstall the older PS CC (such requests make corp IT cranky) or open files with Camera RAW (not compatible with automated batch processing.)

Looking forward to a fix for this as well. Just upgraded to cc2015, and running batch action scripts with file -> SAVE AS, and labels / ratings go Poof. *NOT* a happy camper. Going back to cc2014 is a PITA, since I assume all my settings that have now been imported into CC2015 will *Not* be backwards migrated into a reinstall of cc2014. Is this a correct assumption?

Am ammending this as I've been working on a project where ratings and labels were not being transfered through a Batch Action SAVE AS script... yet all of the sudden I had one folder where it did work. I don't know why this folder was any different, save for the fact that the original files being run through the batch action were TIFF that did work, and JPEG that didn't work. Hope that helps the engineers fix this ASAP.

Photoshop appears to be stripping metadata when saving jpg files. Cf. https://forums.adobe.com/message/7754...

This should be solved by the CC 2015.1 update that was released today: https://blogs.adobe.com/photoshop/201...
