Photoshop Elements: Saved as jpg, but extension saved says "File" and won't open

I just switched from XP to Windows 7 and my Photoshop Elements 7 is not saving correctly. I save a jpg file such as TEST.jpg But it somehow gets named TEST.file and then I cannot open it because it is an incompatible mode. The same thing happens when I save in another mode, such as TIFF.

Yes, I did compatibility testing, only to learn that it is "incompatible," but not what is wrong. Yes, I uninstalled then reinstalled the program after clicking on the "compatibility tab," asking it to run compatible for Windows XP service pack 3, installing an an administrator. Yes, I installed the patch.

Can anyone help?

Looks like you removed the file extension, so the OS and Photoshop don't know what kind of file it is.

No, I saved the files as jpgs. The extension was removed automatically after I saved the file. That is the problem, not the solution! Can you help, please? I cannot use Photoshop Elements at all.

This looks like your preference automatically removes the extension.
Either go to Preference > saving files option.
Or restore the preference by pressing alt(option)+shift+ctrl(command) before launching the app and select to delete the preference file.
