Photoshop: Save States Recorded in History - Accidental History Overwriting

A recent update to Photoshop introduced a history state for save & save as commands. I can see why this and the "Automatically Create New Snapshot" feature could be useful, but it's also been a major hassle for myself.

The problem arises as I frequently toggle between history states to compare changes. I have a strong habit of CTRL-S saving often, and I keep on accidentally overwriting my history by saving while the history panel is multiple states back.

I'm not sure what the best solution to this would be. Maybe the save state should be non-linear or something along those lines. At the very least I'd like to be able to turn off the save state in the history panel.
