Newest release version of Photoshop CC. I open this file (1024x1024px, 400kb) which contains a simple shape imported from Illustrator, with a stroke effect and a second white background layer:

I right click / free transform the shape and scale it up to about 1000x1000px, then press ctrl+s to save as a psd with default settings. I get this error:

Could not save ... because the document is bigger than 2 gigabytes.

Even if the layer I scaled was pixels instead of a shape layer, it shouldn't be anywhere remotely close to 2gb. Something is very wrong here.

Same thing with your file, here.  It works to save as a 3MB TIF but not as a PSD.

The transformation I'm doing is shift-drag of the lower-right corner to the edge.  If I only make it twice as big then it saves ok.

My guess would be that you included some guides from Illustrator, which are VERY LONG lines and may not be visible (off the canvas). Those force the vector mask to cover the entire area of the vectors, including the guides, and the vector mask saved in the file gets HUGE.

Why is a TIF different and works ok?

Same problem here. You can save it as *.PSB which is same as *.PSD but is dedicated to large files. Saved PSB has only 2,3 MB

Maybe Chriss has right. PSD has width and height limitation.
