Running CS3 and my Photoshop layers vanished after I closed my file. What is happening?

I am running on my older CS3 Photoshop software using Yosemite. This has happened twice, where I've created a complex file, saved channels to reload later, and multiple layers in my file. I save often. I just went back to reopen my Photoshop file only to find NO LAYERS, again. I did not save the file as pdf, did not do anything unique. What is happening to my files? Any insight would be great as I've spent significant amount of time on this and a previous file. I'm also having an issue with the crop tool, where I select the area to crop and hit return, only to find I have a single pixel appear on the desktop.

HELP!

Either you saved without layers for some reason (like saving to a file format that doesn't support layers, or turning off the "Layers" checkbox in the save dialog), or your files are becoming corrupted - but normally corruption would give you a message about the layers being unreadable.
