I am trying to upload my photos to Revel. I have several thousand photos (50K+ total in iPhoto...about 200+ GB worth). When I select them all and click import only a few thousand are imported and Revel tells me 2K+ are duplicates, which they are not. Not sure what is happening with the rest. I know for example that a recent iPhoto Event had 100+ pictures but when I go to that date in Revel there are only 10-15 pictures there. I am a novice at this, which is why I have a Mac, but this seems not so user friendly to me. IMO if I select all the photos, they should all upload and magically show up in Revel. I still have 29 days left in my trial but I am not impressed with ease of use so far.

Hi Kent and Margene,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems using Revel!

Please tell me what version of Revel you are using, on your Mac? This may be found in Settings > Adobe ID.

Has the amount of images in your carousel remained unchanged since you posted?

Thank you,

-=Michael

Michael,
Version 1.2. I dont think that the totals have changed despite numerous attempts to download my library from iPhoto. I have 53K+ photos and there are nowhere near that many in my carousel. I really want this to be my storage and syncing solution but its not working so far. Is there a way to get the total number of photos in my carousel? Also, it seems that the photos with the same name as others but with different dates taken may be the problem. I saw a few others had this issue too, were those resolved?

Thanks,
Kent

Hi Kent,

Had you installed any Revel version prior to v1.2? Just want to be sure, though this sounds like your first-time experience.

Let's first try uninstalling/re-install and then attempt to upload images again.

Please remove the Revel icon in your applications folder, and also delete the following user locations and empty your Trash:

~/Library/Containers/com.adobe.Carousel.mac
~/Pictures/Adobe Revel Library.cr

Install Revel again from the App Store. You may also want to create a new carousel and point your upload there. Also, make sure you are in All Photo view (i.e., beside the Settings icon).

Thanks,

Michael,
I reinstalled Revel and its seems to partially have worked. When I went to up load my photos again about 4K of them uploaded. I have no idea now what my total count is in Revel. Is there a way to tell? Once these are done uploading I will get back with you but just wantching the upload, there are still alot of photos being skipped and labeled as duplicates. More to follow....btw I couldnt find the library/containers/com.adobe.carousel.mac file.....

Hi Kent,

OK. Keep us posted on the upload.

Next try to isolate a few of your duplicate scenarios. If you can possibly identify a pair of images where one has been incorrectly rejected as a duplicate we can then do a simple case upload test using another new empty carousel. When confirmed that only one of these two images upload then we can look more closely at the pair.

Thank you for your assistance!

Showing the total number of images in your Revel carousel is a feature other users have also requested. We hope to be able to address this in a future update.

MIchael,
I am still missing severeal thousand photos....is there a way to determine the total number of photos in my account or current carousel?

Also, and this may be changing topics and sorry if it does, but the photo library that revel puts on my harddrive...what is in it? How big does it get? Reason I ask is that I have all of my photos are an external to save room on my hard drive for obvious reasons.

One last question, when I add photos to my iPhoto library, will they be automatically imported to Revel or will I have to do it manually?

I will get back with you on the remaining photos to import. Have to run to work now!

Thanks,
Kent

Michael,
Still having the same problem. As an example, I have an Easter album in iPhoto that has 243 images, all taken on the same day with the same camera. I have tried multiple times to upload all of them but I currently can only get 18 of them into my Carousel, the rest are said to be duplicates. This seems to be the case to some degree with almost all of my albums. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kent

Michael,
Still having the same problem. For example...I have 99 photos in an iPhoto album from St Patricks Day. In Revel after uploading all of my photos, it shows only 9. Most of my albums are this way. I have another that has about 20 and it doesnt even show in my Carousel at all. That date is totally empty. Help this is sooooo frustrating!

Michael,
I tried to create a new carousel and import pictures from and iPhoto album. The album had 273 photos in it. I selected them to import into the new Carousel...and absolutely nothing happened. No photos in the Carousel at all. HELP PLEASE!? This is so frustrating! I really want this to work, this is perfect for us if I can get it to work!

Thanks,
Kent

Hi Kent,

Sorry to hear about all your struggling and frustration. I think working with a smaller number of photos in a new carousel will definitely make it easier to get to the cause and troubleshoot. In the new carousel you describe here with the 273 photos which you are attempting to import, if you go to the Status using the icon in the lower right-hand corner are all 273 images still waiting to upload?

Hi Kent

Michael's away on some well deserved PTO. I'll try to jump in and see if we can resolve this.

You mentioned you have an external drive which you use to keep space free on your main computer? How much free space do you have on your computer hard drive? The reason I ask is that Revel stops adding new files to your Adobe Revel Library in your Pictures folder when you start running low on disk space--this means about 500 MB or less free space.

If you are satisfied with storing copies of all your originals completely in the cloud and not also in Adobe Revel Library, then please try the following steps:
1) disable Keep Originals in Revel app settings
2) delete ~/Pictures/Adobe Revel Library (it will be automatically recreated)
3. launch Revel again, go to Status view (click the eye icon at the bottom) and ensure any remaining photos awaiting upload complete uploading.
4.) If this seems stuck, then close down Revel, and also delete ~/Library/Containers/com.adobe.Carousel.mac (use Shift+Cmd+G from the Finder menu to access this, since it's probably hidden from your view). Then restart Revel
5. If no photos were already awaiting upload in Step 3 above, then go straight to step 4, deleting Revel's app cache and restarting the app.
6. Then try a fresh wave of imports. As David suggested above, I think it best to try this in a new carousel which you can create in settings. A new carousel will allow you to try importing all your images again, whereas importing to your existing carousel will certainly require more CPU time to filter out duplicates from images already uploaded.

Please let us know how this goes, preferably in a new carousel, as it will at least give us a basis for comparison. If this doesn't go any better, would you be open to speaking with one of us directly? I would like to harvest any info I can for our developers, as I'm eager to resolve this not only for you but potentially other users as well.

Thank you,
Charlie

David, Charlie,
Sorry I was away for a few days. I created a new carousel and tried to import the 273 photos. When I looked in the status view, none of the photos was there and the carousel said that everything was up to date.

I do have my iPhoto Library on an external drive. It is a 2 TB drive and has 400 GB of free space left.

I haven't had time yet to complete the steps that Charlie gave me. I will try them this weekend. When you keep the originals in the Revel library, do they change, alter, delete etc the originals that are in the iPhoto Library? If I delete them or choose not to keep them, I just want to make sure that it will not affect my photos in iPhoto.

I'll get back in touch after I complete all the steps in the above response. Thanks for the help.

If it helps, I have no problem talking to someone directly about the issues that I seem to be having.

Thanks,
Kent

Charlie, David, Jason,
I followed Charlie's steps and created a new carousel with a smaller number of photos after completing his steps. I successfully uploaded 107/107 pics from a brand new album (one that I have not previously tried to upload into Revel--I just took them this weekend) into this test carousel.

So, now that this worked...what next? I have probably several hundred events in iPhoto...over 200+ GB as I have said before, and I can only create 5 carousels in Revel. I cant therefore create a carousel for each event. I am not sure how to reasonably upload all of my photos.

Hopefully, this troubleshooting gives you some ideas on how I can upload the rest of my photos. I'll let you know how it goes on my end. My next step is to try another event, one that I have already tried and get it into this test carousel.

Thanks,
Kent

Go ahead and start gradually uploading small amounts at a time. We want to be able to troubleshoot with a small number of files to keep things simple. Maybe do a folder with a reasonably small number of files that failed before next and see if it completes successfully this time around. Let use know how it goes.

Thanks

I've read through this thread because I have very similar problems. I have a separate harddisk in my Mac where I store all my photo's. It has a toplevel subdirectory called "Foto" under which all my 50K+ photo's are, most of them RAW files, so, quite a lot of data (the 2TB disk has about 700GB free). I had already created a carousel for all my iPhone photo's which seemed to work fine. So I created another Carousel for all the photo's on my Mac by simply added the "Foto" directory to it. If I remember well it started continuous harddisk activity for several days but never arrived at a situation that it seemed finished. Always when the Revel app was started my harddisk was active. I had also the impression that when I started Revel it went again through all my photo's to skip almost all of them (already uploaded?) finally arriving at the new ones, but only after hours of time. (I have a very fast internet connection and the latest model six core Mac Pro). Still I never had all my photo's in the carousel. I ended up not starting the app anymore. Yesterday was the expiry of my trial subscription and I nevertheless took a one year of paid subscription as I wanted to give it another try, trusting Adobe would improve things over time. I have now downloaded a new version of the Revel app but the Carousel seems messed up completely. Most photo's have a wrong date and nothing is complete. I've tried to delete the Carousel which seems more or less succesfull although I still see it on my iPhone. I've deleted the cache etc. as instructed in this thread and started again with a new Carousel, adding for the moment only a smaller amount of photo's. Now it seems it has uploaded only jpeg etc. files and it has skipped all the raw files. Also the dates are wrong, probably the dates of creation of the jpegs, the file dates, are taken.

My first question now is: should it Revel work also for RAW files or not ? (if it doesn't it will have little use for me)

BTW I just now discovered that a new version of Lightroom 4 is available, v 4.1, it contains an upload feature for Revel !! I deleted again my carousels and started all over, just using upload from Lightroom. Lightroom exports jpeg files to Revel. I will see how this works.

This means however that a backup of all my raw files to a Carousel was apparently only a dream ... ?

Hi Jules

Revel is a consumer oriented app. Currently, Revel only supports JPEG uploads, though we're looking into supporting other formats in the future, and this may include RAW as more and more users begin to use that format.

In regards to the length of processing time Revel requires, it does seem like you have a huge collection for it to sort through. Approximately how many JPEG images would you say you have?

Lightroom does not upload all my pictures to Revel. The only way to upload them all is to export them all and use the OSX-Revel client. I can not tell why the Lightroom plugin does not upload all pictures. The behaviour of the Plugin is unpredictable.

Bert,
Have you been able to upload pictures at all to Revel from Lightroom 4? I was having problems yesterday with uploading as it was bit slow.
I will look into this and get back to you as a few others have reported the same issue
Thanks

**LIGHTROOM TO REVEL UPDATE** To all users that were not able to upload their images from Lightroom 4.3 to Revel, please try again. I just received an email that this issue should be resolved now as it was an issue on the server end. Also please confirm that your uploaded images show in Revel. Thank you for your patience while this issue was resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

If there is anyone that still can not upload, let me know as I can look into this for you. Our engineers have tested this as it is working correctly now.
Thanks
Scott

Hi Kenneth

Photos you have uploaded to Photoshop.com are transitioning to a new Adobe service called Revel. You should have received separate email about this with helpful info -- if not, please check your spam filter.

I did a quick scan based on the email ID you use for the forum here, and I see your account in is process of being migrated. You should see a separate email from Adobe soon, letting you know when the transition is complete and how to access your photos.

For more information see this page:

I had the same problem with trying to upload all my photos it was taking a very long time and with one of my hard drives it said most of them were not copied because they were duplicates. Then my computer got restarted and it seems that the upload has not continued once relaunching.

It seems that I had the same problems as some of the others on this thread and will try to not keep the originals and see if that helps. But I did wonder how can I restart uploading from where I left off because I just had it set to upload all folders from my external hard drive. Also is there a way to keep originals on an external hard drive versus the computer? My goal is to consolidate all the photos I have over different external hard drives as well as back them up on the cloud. Revel seemed like a great solution but it seems to be having problems. Lastly was there a way to see how many total photos were uploaded because it seems slow to load and I feel like I am missing photos that I thought were uploaded as well.

Bruce,
Are you uploading from an USB external drive? If so, then you might try copying a small batch of images to your computers main hard and try uploading that to see if there is a faster performance. It may not be able to resume if you lost connecting to the external drive during the reboot.

Revel filters out duplicates based on file byte comparisons (aka. hashing or checksumming). Revel will not filter images that are edited copies of originals.

Revel doesn't look at file names when determining whether images are duplicates, but considers the binary contents of the files. If the file contents are exactly the same, then Revel flags them as duplicates regardless of filename and other properties.
When there are two photos with the same pixel data--but one has some metadata added, or is of a different file format, then images are not considered as being duplicates.

There is not a way to change the directory for storing the originals when uploading. The originals are stored in the following location.
/Users/your profile/Pictures/Adobe Revel/Adobe Revel Library.rvl
When you upload the images, it will show you the progress of how many pictures that are uploading. If you use the track view then you can see how many images that are in the album or that is uploaded for the date image was taken.

I can understand about not knowing of which images are missing as it is not stated. It might be a pain to upload smaller batches and time staking but then you can tell which ones are skipped. I uploaded over 500 images as I would have to look thru all of the images to see which ones were skipped. Its not easy. Let me know if you have any other questions
Thanks
Scott
