Elements 13: Resize windows and fonts?

I just DL the trial version of Elements 13 and the interface seems really, really bad. I am optimistic that things can be tweaked on this historically great program.
In the Quick mode,
- the window where my photo is located has grey all the way around it, thus decreasing the area where my photo actually appears. How can I get rid of the gray?
- the Adjustments menu on the right is huge with a comically large font. How can I decrease the size of the font and of the window/menu? No amount of positioning of the cursor allows me to drag the window smaller.
In Expert Mode:
- I selected Window> History and, through a bit of trial and error, was able to arrange the History and Navigator windows on the right, and the edit window with my picture on the left. But then I go to Quick mode and everything is squished to the left, into the window where just my picture was in Expert mode. How can I have the History panel show up in the main window without overlapping my picture, so when I switch between these two modes the photo that I am editing doesn't get cut off from my view?

Thanks for any help. I'm hopeful that I will find this program more useful than frustrating but now, with the childlike UI in Quick mode, I can't see going beyond the trial version.

Another issue: I opened Windows> Layers and this does open in the picture edit window. So now the area in which to view the actual photo that I'm trying to work on is getting smaller and smaller. Please help! There's no way Adobe could have let something that does this out the door!
