Photoshop: Replace existing embedded smart objects with linked smart objects in a PSD file

It would be really nice to have a simple method to replace embedded smart objects with linked smart objects, now that there is a difference. Even a checkbox that enables linked vs. embedded on "replace contents" would work well.

I have lots of level designs with embedded smart objects that I'd love to kick out of the main PSD file to save on file size. As it currently stands I have to manually save each smart object as an external file (unavoidable but necessary), re-import it as a linked file onto a new layer (time wasting step), and then manually place and transform it everywhere I have the embedded smart object (purpose-defeating step).

Like a "convert embedded to linked" command?

Exactly.

If implementing that command is too time consuming or complex (although it sounds like the most ideal solution), a short-term solution of adding a "link" option to "replace contents" would be very useful. I'm not really sure which is harder to develop.
