Lightroom: Repeatable error / issue - Filter by Rating not working when Auto Import turned on

The "filter by rating" (# of stars) functionality in LR CC 2017 stops working when I link my auto import to my Dropbox account. It refuses to "remember" the star ratings requested as a filter and reverts to showing all.

When I turn off Auto Import, the filter by rating works properly.

Paul,

You are auto-importing by watching a folder that is currently in a Dropbox. Correct?
When you auto-import to where are the files being moved?  Also a Dropbox folder?

The star ratings are applied when: Prior to Import? After Import?
The file type you are importing is?

The precise workflow is:

[Edits to workflow]

iPhone takes a picture,
Dropbox App uploads the JPEG photo to the cloud Dropbox "Camera Uploads" folder
Dropbox synchs the cloud Dropbox folder to the desk top Dropbox folder.
Lightroom Auto Import "sees" the changes in the desktop Dropbox folder and Auto Imports (moves) JPEGS to my separate primary photos folder structure on a different drive

It all works, brilliantly.

However, when this Auto Import process is switched on the whole of the Filter by Rating process in Library and Develop no longer works, for all images in the Catalog, not just the Dropbox images.

When the Auto Import process is switched off, the Filter by Rating process works as expected.

Paul,
I like your workflow for iPhone images. I am not sure I know how to set this up on my iPhone and LR/Computer. Can you provide additional details?
Thank you,
Jeff

Sorry for the delay - I missed this earlier.

1. Set up Dropbox on your phone and tell it to synch your photos. It should create a "Camera Uploads" folder on your LR computer
2. Set up Lightroom to AutoImport images from the Dropbox "Camera Uploads" folder. File>AutoImport will get you to the setting section.

Note that this folder will need to be empty before it will do it. You might need (temporarily at least) move any synched photos out of this folder and then, when it's locked in, move them back in.

My settings in Auto Import are:

Enable Auto Import -> checked
Watched Folder -> E:\Dropbox\Camera Uploads

Move to: P:\!Digicam\_Dropbox Photos
Subfolder Name: Auto_Imported_Photos

File Naming: Filename
I leave the Information  section as set automatically.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the update, Paul. One more question: If you eliminate Dropbox as a source of or a copy to location and then use Auto Import, does the star rating filtering still fail or does it work?

Oohh... I just did a quick series of tests:

(1) Check that the symptoms were still as I had reported (they were)
(2) Set up a non-Dropbox chain of folders and attached them to LR CC, added some random JPEGS to them and watched them import (repeated restarts of LR CC 17 to be safe. Filter Function working fine
(3) Tested the Auto Import function - it worked perfectly with non-Dropbox folders
(4) Set up the Auto Import function against the Dropbox folder and took a random picture with iPhone to check working (it is)
(5) Checked Auto Import function - Filter Function works perfectly with Dropbox folders!

The only thing I did in between the various restarts was delete a Dropbox.ini (!!! - I thought they were long gone) file from the Camera Uploads folder and some old JPEGs which refused to synch. Something weird has been going on for sure, but it seems to be working fine now.

Thanks for asking some good questions Rikk. I think it's sorted itself out now.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I hope I never have to talk to you again!
Seriously though, thank you for your help.
