Renaming AVC video files in Bridge AND retaining link to original metadata

I'm currently working with a lot a footage for a documentary and need to be able to rename the AVC files to more unique names so that we don't confuse the 00001.mts numbers across 50 different folders, and for search-ability in finder.

Bridge will nicely batch rename them, but in doing so, it breaks the link to th eoriginal XMP file that contains all of the metadata. Not a huge problem, except that the director/producer would like to use Prelude to subclip and generate rough cuts, and once Bridge renames the MTS files, all of the markers in Prelude are greyed out and unusable because the XMP doesn't reference the "new" names of the MTS files.

Is there a way to rename AVC video files AND update the original XMP file so that the metadata is still attached outside of an Adobe environment( say Finder). I would love to have unique file names live on my server AND in my project. Seems like a simple thing and we've been doing just that for years with the XDCAM format. That allows me to rename the files as I log/ingest AND update the file names/metadata on the original source disk at the same time. Works perfect if I need to rebuild a project from scratch since all of the file titles are unique.

Anyone else have this issue?
