renamed files inlightroom and lost my edits

I decided to get more organized and started renaming files by the occasion rather than the date. Great idea, but the problem is that I was in the middle of edits in some of those files, and the completed edits do not show up in the folder with the new name. They still show in the previous folder that was named by date.

I right-clicked the question mark by the old file and chose "find missing folder", and attempted to merge the two folders. Lightroom responds with "The selected folder or one of its subfolders is already in Lightroom. Do you want to combine these folders?" I choose "merge", and get the response "Some folders could only be partially combined because files of the same name existed in both locations. The duplicate files and folders have been left in their previous location."

I do not need to be forced to re-edit all of the files already completed! Help. I use a PC and I'm using the Lightroom CC software.

Did you rename files, or folders? Or even both? Sounds like you renamed your files/folders outside Lightroom. The result is that Lightroom does not recognizes the renamed file(s), and cannot find the original files. That is why you should never do this outside Lightroom...

If you can rename the files/folders back and replace your catalog with a backup copy, you could start again and this time do it in Lightroom.
