i dropped a single photo on to the photoshop express uploader. there i checked the file size by looking at "total upload" for the one photo and confirmed file size as 8.4 MBs.

once it was uploaded i used photo properties to re-confirm the file size as 8.4 MBs. then editing in the photoshop express organizer i increased "saturation," used the "auto white balance", and subtracted the minimum "highlight." i also cropped slightly less than 15%. i repeat that i cropped slightly because after the editing my file size shrunk to only 1.1 MBs.

please, how did i lose 7.3 MBs of information? can what i am calling a small crop reduce the file size by -87%?

ps. note i've repeated the process with the same result.

Its not the cropping only that plays the part in reducing the file size. Whenever you edit jpg files, the edited file would be saved as low quality jpg image. Thats why the file size reduces. Also, if you are editing a raw file, then it always save it as jpg which will have less file size than that of raw file.
