rectanglar marguee tool

In Elements 14 the rectangular marquee tool does not select or find any pixels, as it gives constant error messages for that. AND, it has round corners. Change it back to square corners so we can see what it's selecting. Also, it selects pixels, and we want to select an image within an image or frame or layer. This has become frustrating. Our company is seriously thinking of changing to a much better developed system that doesn't change things that has totally helped us in the past so much. In the past we could use this tool to select and even crop. Now the crop tool has become a bigger problem as it outlines pixels (again) and it needs to be move, changed, as the lines compete with (my) changes and fights against moving it around. Why did Adobe change this? It's totally annoying. I have been pro for 17 years. I want this to change in Elements 15. Otherwise, I will stop buying Photoshop every year. There's even amateurs who have developed more complex systems. Think I will try those instead. I am a tech. I have not found any work-around for the rectangular select tool and the crop tool both. If there is , please answer this.

Sounds like you have a feather going on. Check the tool options. Concerning the crop tool: it works fine in version 14. I had version 12 before this. I usually tap the Escape key when it pops in a crop box I don't want to start with.

Check your Tool Options - click that button if they are not visible.  If you still can't figure out what is happening, post a print-screen of your Elements - Expert mode with the rectangular marquee tool selected and the tool options visible:

I am not sure all what you're talking about regarding cropping, but if you mean you don't like Snap-To-Edges then hold the Ctrl or Cmd key while you drag the edge.  If you are talking about the grid being shown, then make the tool options visible and set it to no grid:
