Hi,
I posted this to one of the discussions called "recreating 1:1 previews" but did not recieve a response. Can you help? I think it is a LR problem.

Yes Yes! This totally happens to me too. I've been surfing the web like crazy trying to find out what is going on in this instance. I see what was written below about the previews not being deleted right away, but here is the thing. In addition to doing what the person above described (deleting and rerendering), the previews ACT like they are not there. For example, I'll have a folder of photos that were rendered 1:1 previews. I work on them for several days, during which time each photo comes up at the 1:1 preview sharp and without any lag. Then, my system decides the week is up and it is time to delete the previews (my settings, which I know I can change). I go to the folder, and notice a long lag in generation of 1:1 previews. So, I select the photos I want to work on, go to "render 1:1 previews" and click. Nothing happens in the task box. (Normally when I render, I can watch the process in the task box and it gives me % done). So then I decide to delete the 1:1 previews in case something is bogged down. Delete preview, try to rerender, again nothing happens. AND, when I try to look at the 1:1 versions of those photos, there is still a huge lag, like the system has to rebuild those previews when I click on it. If these "previews are not immediately deleted from the preview file" wouldn't they still open quickly as they usually do when there is a 1:1 preview? Please help!!

Sounds like there may be a bug here, which I'll investigate. In the meantime, if you're having trouble with previews, you could delete the Lightroom previews directory. By default it's called "Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews.lrdata" and is located in your Pictures directory. If you've named your Lightroom catalog something else, or put it somewhere else, then this could be different.
Try just moving this folder to the desktop (that way you can always put it back). Then launch Lightroom. This will force Lightroom to rerender all previews, and you may find that rendering 1:1 previews will now work.

Thanks,
Ben

Haven't been able to reproduce this problem myself. Would be curious to know if tossing the previews directory fixed the problem for you.

I'll check. I haven't been working much with LR lately, but I did adjust my settings to keep 1:1 previews indefinitely. I'll recreate the problem, and then try your solution. Does that mean it will need to rerender all 1:1 previews when moved to desktop? BTW, I have tried deleting the previews folder, but that does not work. If you are trying to duplicate it, you might try this: take a folder with a bunch of photos, render 1:1 previews. Then, next day, have LR delete 1:1 previews. Next day have it render them and see if it actually goes through the process. (I don't have it doing anything at this point in the upper left corner) Then try opening at 1:1 and see if there is a lag, which there probably will be if it did not actually show that it rendered the previews.

Yes, that is what I did in my test.

Yes, if you delete the Previews folder, you will need to rerender all previews, including 1:1 previews. When you say "BTW, I have tried deleting the previews folder, but that does not work" do you mean that you deleted the folder "Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews.lrdata" off of disk from the file system, or do you mean that you selected Library>Previews>Discard 1:1 Previews from the menu within Lightroom? I am suggesting that you try the former.

Thanks,
Ben

when I deleted the folder, I actually deleted the entire previews folder that you mention above , I did not do the selecting discard 1:1 previews from menu.

I tried moving the previews folder to the desktop, and it still is happening. I think I figured out what is going on...ok, so I selected several photos and went to Library>Previews>Render 1:1 Previews from the menu for the selected photos. It did it, and I could watch on the right top area to see how far along it was getting. Then, I looked at the photos at 1:1 ratio, no lag, no problem. Then, I selected the same photos and hit Library>Previews>Discard 1:1 Previews from the menu. Watched task bar again as it deleted them. THEN, a few minutes later (which might be the key here), tried to rebuild the 1:1 previews from the menu with those same photos. No task bar, no indication it was working. Then, viewed those photos at 1:1, and it was obviously having to come up with the previews as it went along, which gave it a serious lag time. Now, with my system, it seems to not want to rebuild photos even after a day or two. But, maybe that varies from system to system.
