Lightroom: Re-arranging photos in collection stops functioning

After LR is open for only 20 minutes or so, erratic behaviour expresses itself through disabling the ability to re-arrange photos in a collection. Initially, I'm able to highlight images and drag them to a new area of the collection (grid view). After a while, selecting photos is still an option, but moving them is 'disabled' whereas I can't see the translucent stack of photos while keeping the mouse button depressed and moving the mouse. It's like the function has disabled itself. Restarting LR resets the behaviour. This happened in other instances of LR as well.

Windows 10 64.

YES. On the Macintosh rearranging collections has become erratic. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It has always been a little tricky but latest version makes it sometimes impossible and often erratic.

Have you tried resetting LR's preferences: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/. LR often soils its own preferences, causing the user interface to act wonky, and many wierdnesses over the years have been fixed by resetting them.

I've reset the preference file recently (after the most recent LR update), but it's not a habit I want to get into.

I don't think this should be promoted as a solution (though I understand it sometimes alleviates LR troubles), as the weirdness should really be fixed by devs, not the consumers.

Does resetting the preferences make the problem go away, at least for a while?

"the weirdness should really be fixed by devs, not the consumers"

Very much agreed.  It's clear that LR has long had an architectural problem with corrupted preferences.

However, it's the sad reality that some of these problems persist for years, and it usually takes Adobe at least a couple of months at the minimum to fix a problem.  People come to this forum looking for ways to alleviate problems and want both short-term workarounds as well as long-term permanent fixes.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Lightroom: Problem re-ordering images in collections.

I've noticed an inconsistent problem in the latest version of Lightroom (Windows 10) whereby I can reorder images in a collection for a while, then...not. It's like LR gets tired and stops allowing me to move photos around. I start getting an error message with regards to not being able to re-order images, then a complete inability to click-hold and move photos around altogether. Restarting LR seems to resolve the issue, though.

See this topic for a possibly related bug: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/in-lightroom-after-an-unsuccessful-drag-of-an... The symptoms sound similar, but the other topic concerns folders, not collections, so I'm not merging the two topics.
