PHOTOSHOP RAW Files Created with PS CS4 Not Read by PS CC

I have been using PS from CS4 and converted Nikon NEF files to the PS .raw format. When I now try to open these .raw files in PS CC, there is just noise when I try to view it. Have I missed a step in CC in order to open these .raw files created in CS4?

Thanks, Paul.

Did you confuse Camera RAW (raw dumps of sensor data) with Photoshop RAW (a dump of the bits, with no formatting, depth, or color mode data, usually used by software developers for special cases) ?

Yes, to open Photoshop RAW files again you need to note the image size, color mode, channel count, bits per channel, etc. to read the raw bytes in again.

Thanks for this.

So, if I go back to the "old PS" (CS4) it seems to know the particulars of the file that I saved in the PS .raw format. This is not the case for the CC version. But I can manually add the data I see when I open these in CS4 and all is well.

I suppose I should save the NEF file (after opening in PS CC) in another format then? Suggestions welcomed.

And thanks for your help.

Paul.

That would be because CS4 wrote some of the extra information in the resource fork of the file on MacOS. That wouldn't work on Windows (no resource fork), and won't work in more recent versions of Photoshop because Apple has deprecated the APIs for working with resource forks.

Yes, you saved to the wrong file format due to a misunderstanding of what the format was. Yes, you really need to save to a different file format that will preserve all your document information (PSD, TIFF, etc.).
