Publish services having severe performance impact on "Import from catalog" in Lightroom

I'm experiencing the following problem (Lightroom 4.3 on Windows 8 Laptop with 16GB of Ram - same on Ultrabook with 4GB of RAM)

I export some (~5000 ) photos from my large master catalog (~77000 photos), work on this copy (typically on an Ultrabook) and then reimport this catalog into the master catalog. Workflow works fine as long as I don't use any publish services.

However, as soon as photos are added to publish services, performance goes dramatically down making this workflow completely unuseable. This does not depend on the type of Publish services (tried several ones, among others the "Publish to harddrive" (or whatever it's called in English - I have a German Lightroom), Publish to Flickr, and several others, so seems to be a generic Ligthroom problem with publish services.

Performance impact is not during import itself, but during the preceding check for existing photos. It only occurs if there is an overlap between the photos in the publsih service and the photos in the catalog to be imported.

I did some measurement (numbers for the Ultrabook, but qualitatively the same behaviour on the large, powerfull laptop):

For 1000 photos it takes ~17 Minutes, did additional measurements for 300,500, 750 and 1500 photos contained in both publish service and catalog - result: Durations scales with the square of the number of photos.

This would mean that 5000 photos would theoretically need about 7 hours - in reality it did crash before the 7 hours were over, meaning I cannot use my Workflow in conjunction with publish services at all.

(One technical thought: The fact that the performance scales with the square of the number of the photos might suggest that a full table scan occurs for each such photo, so if this mere speculation turns out to be true, it might be easyily corrected in a future Lightroom version by adding a suitable index in the database...)
