After a clean-install Windows 10 Pro 64bit I noticed that PSE13 now stores a copy of imported media with a ".PG_original" extension.
I faintly remember in previous versions of PSE that in preferences there was an option to enable/disable original files save after adding/changing EXIF data. It seems PSE13 does now by default keeps a copy of the original file.
Any method of disabling this copy of the original file?

I'm pretty sure that is still somewhere in the preferences. Your Windows clean install probably also wiped the PSE preferences file, so you're now back in the default settings.

That's of course the first place I started to look, Johan. But I couldn't and still can't find any reference to this settings.
My PSE13 is "Core Version: 13.1.1"

The problem has been solved. Not PSE was the culprit but a geotagging utility which could not delete its temp files because of a temporary problem.
