Elements 12 erasing Brightness Contrast

Trying to erase through a brightness/contrast layer and despite the brush being at 100% opacity, it is only erasing to about 20% opacity. This problem started when I was trailing the new PSE12. I decided to buy the upgrade in the hopes the bug would go away, but it hasn't. I have since deleted PSE8 from my computer and uninstalled and reinstalled PSE12 and the bug remains. I have reset my brush opacity using the CTL+0 and the bug remains. What can I do now?

Check the settings for the tool, and the color settings as you paint on the layer mask.

Great, thanks! That fixed my problem - it was the colour settings. So my next problem is intermittent, when I erase areas of a layer it erases in large pixels and all messed up. The brush is a standard soft edge brush and after I relaunch the program it will work properly again. This happens on about every 2 - 5 images I edit and has done this since the trial version. I layer an unsharp mask and then erase most of the image away. The unsharp mask layer is the one that always has this problem. Sometimes when I add this layer it will jump automatically to soft light mode (even though it is set to normal mode) and I have to restart the program to fix this issue also.
