In importing photos. So actually PSE will not duplicate files with the same name. Has nothing to do with the actual photo being a duplicate?
I have had thousands of old photos transferred to DVD, they are assigned a number....a long number, unfortunately some of my photos are duplicates. So PSE will not recognize them as duplicates as long as they have different file names?

The organizer does not allow what it considers as 'duplicates' to be imported in its catalogs.
Files with the same name are not 'duplicates' for the organizer. There are reasons for that:
- cameras which start over numbering after 9999 pictures
- scanners which always use the same numbers
- different cameras from the same manufacturers

The criteria chosen for the organizer is that duplicates files have:
- the same 'date taken' in their metadata section
- the same size in kilobytes.

Believe me, I have many 'IMG_0001.jpg' in my catalog, and that's not a problem.
Keep in mind that Windows does not allow duplicate names in a given subfolder.

Thank you for the reply. I'm kind of relieved to know that it doesn't compare file names. The dates are another problem for me as the DVDs have tons of photos from many decades (no dates). Many duplicates have been imported and it is taking me forever to try to sort through them. So far, my solution has been to just set up albums and try to sort them that way. Maybe in the smaller albums I will have better luck locating my duplicates. Again, thanks for your response, it helps.

I understand your point: I have had the same problem trying to gather old family photos from family members. The same photos appeared several times with different formats and sizes!
One of the features of the organizer is 'visual similarity' search. That may help.

Since those 'visual duplicates' don't waste much disk space, instead of taking the time to choose which are the best to keep or delete, I have often only stacked them for easier future visual retrieval.

Sometimes the visual search sent much help. Often they are not even close to being duplicates. I'll try the new PSE version. Sounds like face recognition is better. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond
