Photoshop Elements 9 (running on Microsoft Windows 7) freezes on the 'type' tool - and freezes the computer in the process. After rebooting the computer operates as it should. I have tried reinstalling PSE 9 to no avail. I have attempted to update PSE 9 but have no idea whether this has been successful. Can I download PSE 13 to replace PSE 9 and will it work? PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP?

Does the whole computer freeze/lock up so that you have to turn off the power to restart it? If so, you're looking at an OS bug, a low level driver bug, or defective hardware. Applications cannot make the entire system freeze, shutdown, or reboot.

If just Elements is freezing, then you might be looking at a corrupt font file, or OS font cache on your system.

Yes, you could download the trial for Elements 13 and try it for 30 days.

Howdy Oscar,

Have you recently added one or more fonts to your machine?  If so, it's VERY likely that one or more of those fonts was corrupt; remove it, and your problem should go away (though you might need to clean your font cache).  I work on Photoshop rather than Elements, but the basic concept is the same.  A single corrupt font can take them ALL out.  Fonts which you download free from the web are far more likely to have these issues as are non-Latin-based fonts, particularly Arabic and Devanagari ones (not because of the language, but rather because they're usually hacked up, with the glyphs shoe-horned in!).

Hope that helps,

To both David & Chris with thanks for your help. No, I haven't added any new fonts to my computer - I wouldn't know how to! If I can find the 30 day trial for Elements 13 I will have a go at that, because I also wouldn't know how to remove an operating system bug - might have to get some hands-on help if that is the case.
