My second file that will not open due to 'could not complete your request because it is not a valid document' - the first file i just gave up and made a new one but this is my resume and will take hours of remaking! Any one know why this has happened so I can avoid it again? Or how to fix?

See: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/determine-the-file-type-of-a-document.html

It's likely a different document type (e.g. a JPEG file) with a PSD extension.

Howdy Chloe,

Are you running on Catalina?  Please be aware that Catalina doesn't automatically append file type extensions, which can lead to confusion like this.

Thanks,
David

Hi Chloe,
We are terribly sorry that you cannot open your PSD file.  I can only imagine how frustrating this can be.  There have been a few customers who have been similarly experiencing your issue.

Most of them have been able to get their PSD file opening by enabling Preferences -> Performance -> Legacy Compositing.  I hope this helps.  Please let us know if it does or does not work out.

Sincerely,
Andrew
