That could mean that you have a LOT of presets, that you have moved the application (and it's now scanning your entire disk), that you have a link to somewhere else in the presets folder (and is scanning a huge or slow directory), or that you have problems with your disk and the OS is hanging while trying to scan the presets directory.

Dear Chris - thank you for your suggestions and I much appreciate your reply.

PS is my last resort pixel editor as most of my photo-editing is done in Aperture, sadly now out of date but works well for me.

Unfortunately none of these apply, the only change was the update on OSX to 10.11.01 (now updated to 10.11.01).

I recently discovered a change in OSX which alters permissions to /user as many other LaTeX fans discovered too and I wonder if PS6 needs to access this area of the HDD, one fix for LaTeX was to change $Path to point to new locations via Library?

No, this doesn't sound like a permissions issue.

Either Photoshop is scanning a lot of files, or it is waiting on the OS to access files.

Dear Chris

- thank you again for taking the trouble to reply.
So 'taking the bullet by horns and got bitten' - or some such old phrase I reinstalled and its up and running.
Makes me appreciate a reasonably fast machine and internet conneciton.

Thanks again - rik
