Photoshop: Crash since Camera Raw update 9.12

I'm running PS CC 2017 Adobe Photoshop Version: 2017.1.1 20170425.r.252 with AMD GPU R9 270x with GPU Acceleration support. Which always worked just fine and benefited from GPU acceleration (when I switch off Graphics Acceleration there is a noticeable slowdown in many functions)
A few days ago, I've received the Camera RAW update 9.12 which was auto installed.
Since then (!) Photoshop CC 2017 crashes and the error messages pinpoint to the graphics acceleration.
"RelaxedOpenCL crashed on 24-7-2017 at 12:13:06 (Initializing OpenCL features with relaxed OpenCL requirements)"
When I switch off Graphics Acceleration support, indeed the crash disappears. BUT also the benefits of GPU support disappear.
I've tried enabling all individual options of the Graphics Acceleration support in PS CC 2017 and the specific option Use OpenCL is the culprit! Which is also used by the Camera RAW plugin (crash happens since the Camera RAW update --> 9.12)

Platform: Win 10 64bit Pro Version    10.0.14393 Build 14393 (all latest drivers)
GLDriverVersion="22.19.171.1024" (very latest from AMD)

The crash occurs when PS CC 2017 tries to open a large file to process.
According to the crash report:

Crashed thread:         78 [8932] THREAD_PRIORITY_NORMAL

Exception Code:         0xc0000374
Exception Parameters:   0x57b0f6b0
Exception Message:      3221226356 A heap has been corrupted.

So, the crash does not occur as long as the Use OpenCL option is not selected. But when I leave the Use OpenCL option disabled, I'm missing the benefits of GPU acceleration for these specific functions.

So @Adobe; please help!

What Radeon driver version are you using? You should be using 17.6.2 or later. There were crashing issues with versions just prior.

FYI:
I've just updated to Camera RAW 9.12.1
But THIS issue has NOT been resolved. :-(

PS CC 2017 keeps on crashing as long as the OpenCL option is checked.
Same error message:

Crash_[timestamp]_RelaxedOpenCL.txt
1 Initializing\x20OpenCL\x20features\x20with\x20relaxed\x20OpenCL\x20requirements

Crash_[timestamp]_OpenCL.txt
1 Initializing\x20OpenCL\x20and\x20OpenCL\x20enabled\x20features

RelaxedOpenCL crashed on [timestamp] (Initializing OpenCL features with relaxed OpenCL requirements)

Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display drivers, and has...

As soon as I uncheck the OpenCL option, PS CC 2017 continues to function...
So, PS CC 2017 still does need some debugging.

Please @Jeffrey Tranberry; help! Thank you!

What with some bugs in Radeon drivers lately, I'm reluctant to update anything at the moment. I'm on AMD 17.9.1 and ACR 9.10 until someone pipes up.

Camera Raw doesn't use the OpenCL or Use Graphics Processor preferences in Photoshop. Camera Raw has a separate pref. Sounds like you're toggling the Photoshop prefs.

What operations are you doing when you see the crash? Is it when you're using Camera Raw, or doing something different in Photoshop?

Yes, I know, both Camera Raw and PS have their own Open CL check marks.
I hardly use the Camera Raw functionality (mostly do my RAW conversions with other software). And I read almost exclusively TIFF files with PS CC 2017.

When the check mark @ Open CL is set (in PS), when opening 1 or multiple TIFF files, without any warning, PS crashes, after a few seconds, when starting to do some work on the open file.
E.g. when zooming in/out, trying to apply some filters, using the Google/NIK plugins, etc. Adjusting color/contrast/toning, etc. just clicking my way (as I'm doing already for >10 years with PS) through the files and all the PS tools.
BTW: my TIFFs are always large; starting @ 100Mb, ranging up to 1-2Gb.
(Yes, I know the Google/NIK plugins have their own GPU setting; but it's regardless of this setting)

What I have discoverd so far:
When I leave the check mark @ Open CL unchecked, PS works just fine.
When I roll back my Windows setup to the situation before the Camera RAW update, PS works also ok (with ALL the GPU acceleration check marks set)
But then, the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app starts updating the Camera RAW update 9.12, and BENG, PS starts crashing again. :-(

So, Yes, it has to do with the latest 9.12 update...

Just to be sure, I uninstalled the Google/NIK plugins (but I'm daily heavy user of this tools), but the crashes remain with PS CC 2017, as long as Open CL is activated with Camera RAW 9.12 installed.

@Jeffrey: did you see the PS crash log files, I posted?

Test setup:

  • -first created a system restore point (just in case)
  • -start PS CC 2017; enable the OpenCL GPU option
  • -close PS CC 2017.
  • -select a number (3) of (large) TIFF files, open with PS CC 2017.
  • -AND, PS CC 2017 crashes (!) while opening the 3 TIFF files. From the Windows Event Log:
  • Faulting application name: Photoshop.exe, version: 18.1.1.252, time stamp: 0x58fefd04
Faulting module name: amdocl64.dll, version: 22.19.171.1024, time stamp: 0x595c1705
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x000000000022ac70
    Faulting process id: 0x28e4
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d306acb9a73edc
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017\Photoshop.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\c0315940.inf_amd64_2b462f080682210e\amdocl64.dll
  • -PS CC 2017 creates 2 crash files: (in temp\PhotoshopCrashes):
  • Crash_OpenCL.txt (see the previous error content in my earlier posting)
  • Crash_RelaxedOpenCL.txt (see the previous error content in my earlier posting)
  • and a number of temp\CEPHtmlEngine7-PHXS-18.1.1-com.adobe.xxx files, containing error messages:
  •  ERROR Error calling Heartbeat
  •  ERROR Error calling ImsFetchAccessToken
  •  ERROR Error calling Heartbeat
  •  ERROR Error invoke API synchronously
  • -then I start PS CC 2017 again, without opening files, and get the error message:
  • "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display drivers, and has..."
  • I see that the 'Use Graphics Processor' is now UNchecked in PS CC 2017
  • -I enable 'Use Graphics Processor' again AND uncheck the 'Use OpenCL' option manually (other options are checked)
  • -Close PS CC 2017
  • -Repeat the action with opening a number files, and now PS CC 2017 works, without errors!

How much clearer can it be?
It clearly has to do when PS CC 2017 wants to use the OpenCL API from the AMD graphics driver.
And this issue started with the update to Camera RAW 9.12

AMD just released a fresh WHQL certified driver. I've done a clean install of this driver (reboot from safe mode with DDU)

Radeon Settings Version - 2017.0720.1902.32426
Driver Packaging Version - 17.30.1041-170720a-316391C-CrimsonReLive
Provider - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
2D Driver Version - 8.1.1.1614
Direct3D® Version - 9.14.10.01292
OpenGL® Version - 6.14.10.13491
OpenCLTM Version - 22.19.662.4
AMD Mantle Version - 9.1.10.0220
AMD Mantle API Version - 102400
AMD Audio Driver Version - 10.0.1.1
VulkanTM Driver Version - 1.6.0
VulkanTM API Version - 1.0.51

But that does NOT solve this PS CC 2017/Camera RAW 9.12 problem! :-(
I have done the entire test setup again, but as soon as the OpenCL option is checked, PS CC 2017 does crash.

BTW: In the mean time I've already removed all Adobe software, deleted all registry entries, cleared out all appdata remains and subdirs. Reinstalled all the Adobe software (lots of time/work!). But it did not resolve the above issue. :-(

I have almost the exact same configuration as here and am having the same issue.  Started with the most recent update of Camera Raw and Lightroom.  I can recreate the problem easily by re-enabling the graphic processor and open a raw file from Lightroom (via Edit in Photoshop).  I've update everything and done a clean install of latest AMD drivers.

Here's the system info:

Congratulations! Or must I say my condolences? ;-)

Big question @ Adobe: is it an AMD driver issue, introduced with the update from Camera RAW 9.12? And/or a specific combination?

I am having similar problems since i updated the DRIVER to 17.7.1

Lr is OK, but Ps crashes on start-up. However when it starts w/o CPU acceleration, it goes well and it allows me to select the graphics processor inthe performance settings.

No word on the question of Adobe or AMD issue?

All quiet on the Western Front  it seems...

I've been trying numerous on/off options with AMD graphic settings. As well as the acceleration options from PS CC 2017. But no luck.
Only the OpenCl option from PS CC 2017 DOES LET PS crash...
And the GPU acceleration which I use with PTGui Pro (also OpenCL) DO WORK great!

For the time being, most of the GPU acceleration support seems to be working ok. Especially things like some filtering and/or fast zooming.

But it would be appreciated if Adobe would respond... Thank you!

Problems remain after updating to AMD 17.8.1

Photoshop stops working after "edit in photoshop" is invoked from Lightroom.

Problem can be circumvented by first setting the graphics card to factory settings, starting PS without graphics processor, then enabling graphics in PS and finally using "edit in PS" from LR.

Em, does PS use the GPU without re-starting after enabling graphics in PS?  Hope this works, I'm having the same issue.  Hope it gets fixed faster than the LR problem with AMD drivers a couple of months ago!

in my case:
in the performance setting GPU is off
Then i switch it on. And all seems to work without restart. (Liquify does not tell me that it needs GPU).

Can somebody enlighten me about the nature of this forum. Should Adobe reply, or is just a free for all ?

Updated my AMD Driver to 17.8.2. Problem remains.  If I unselect (disable) OpenCL, it appears to allow me to use some features of the graphics card.

Have exactly the same issue as all of you above.....irritating, seems like an adobe PS bug and not a radeon problem...anyways please fix it....
In Camera raw and nik tools gfx hardware does do its job, it' sPS only that crashes immediately.

win 10, latest cc updates, 17.8.2 driver on a r7 200.

Thinking of updating to AMD driver version 17.10.1.  Guess there's still silence on this ongoing issue.

I'm currently running the latest (!) WHQL Radeon Software Version
17.7.2 driver from AMD; problem with Adobe OpenCl crashes not solved yet. :-(
BTW: the 17.10.1 version is non-WHQL

And as regarding to any concrete support from Adobe; I haven't heard/seen anything...

Ok, today's adobe updates didn't help......thinking about ditching the Ati graphic card now..........Fortunately adobe did fix some issues that stopped working after updates.
